Question:

Identify two news events that the publication had used live blogging to cover. Record the story’s development, including the length of the post, the timeline (i.e. how frequent the post is published), and examine the multimedia elements used in the story. Include also your comments on the issue of balance, attribution and verification.

If you are asked to curate the content for each news event, what do you suggest? Think of your social media platforms and how do you see they are helpful in curating the relevant content?

News event 1:

The development of this live blogging started with PCR rule change comes into effect as PM pressures experts to cut isolation period. From today the people who produce a positive lateral flow test will no longer need to take a PCR test to confirm their result. There are around 9 posts in this live blogging. The length of each post in this live blogging is around 2 to 8 paragraphs. The timing of publishing the posts is not consistent, ranging from 10 to 40 minutes.

This story included 3 types of multimedia elements, which are photos and videos. There are merely text updates and include the photos. The content of the story is surrounding the issue of Covid-19 situation and Then, the story covers several countries including US, China, Africa, Japan, India, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and so on.

If I am asked to curate the content, I would interview more parties from different aspects and ask the particular professional aspects whether it is good to not do isolation. Then, I also will ask their own country's community to know their desire, what their opinion is on this issue. Their opinion I will make it as the audio section for those readers who are unable to read this issue. Besides, I will also find other similar information to post on the blog and attach some Twitter posts that are related to this issue as extra information to the readers.

News event 2:

The development of this live blogging started with the official cases in Africa past 10m and London hospital chief says 10% of staff were unvaccinated as it happened. There are around 9 posts in this live blogging. The length of each post in this live blogging is around 2 to 7 paragraphs. The timing of publishing the posts is not consistent, ranging from 10 to 40 minutes.

The story only included videos and pictures. However, most of the posts only include pictures and the text updates. Then, the story covers several countries including Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Americas and so on. The content of the story is surrounding the issue of Covid-19 situation and the staff were unvaccinated and it posted a lot of information. So, to avoid too much information, The Guardian provides a “key events” place to filter the fluttered information. The advantage of this is it can help readers to have a better understanding and reading experience in this news story.

If I am asked to curate the content, I would add more information such as on scene live reporting about why the staff are not willing to get vaccinated. Also, I will do the street interviews to understand the people who were vaccinated. Then, I think it is better to add in more multimedia elements, such as videos. Other than that, I think it is better to add some hypertext in the story because it is good for readers to read the extra information.
